In The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, Númenor was an island between Middle Earth and Valinor. It was raised out of the see as the dwelling place for those of mankind who had been faithful to the Valar and had resisted Morgoth. Elros, son of Eärendil and brother of Elrond, was it's first king. The Númenoreans were blessed with long lives and under the protection of the Valar, their realm was fair and prosperous for many long years even as Middle Earth darkened.
But they longed for even more. They wished for the immortality of the Elves and the Valar and longed to journey to the Undying Lands that they could see to the west. Sauron, Morgoth's lieutenant of old, came amongst them in disguise and encouraged these treacherous thoughts. Under the influence of Sauron, King Ar-Pharazon sought to wage war on the West. He then lead a great fleet to Valinor and calmed lordship over it.
Then Iluvatar showed forth his power and changed the fashion of the world. The Undying Lands were sundered from Middle Earth forever. Ar-Pharazon's fleets were drawn into the abyss and Númenor sank into the sea.
